We’re not normally ones to brag but we hope you’ll forgive us on this occasion – after all, it’s not every day (or year even!) when a company can say they’ve got eight nominees for an industry award!
Sound on Sound have published their shortlist of nominations for their inaugural annual awards – all of which are chosen by SOS editors, writers and reviewers. There are 15 categories in total including DAW Software, Keyboard/Synth, Mixer, Monitors, and Headphones to name a few. 
Announced earlier this year, Q is a new virtual instrument powered by Native Instruments Kontakt 4 from Vir2, the software development arm of US sample legends Big Fish Audio. In short, Q is a sound design and scoring instrument library designed to be used for television, film, game, and media. It is also a useful tool for music producers who want to add a unique and cutting edge angle to their sonic palette.
This week has seen the announcement of Metric: Odd Meter Drumloops from Big Fish Audio in the US. This got me thinking as I believe it is the very first sample library that is completely dedicated to recorded drum performances that are not in the conventional 4/4 signature. There are loops included in 3/4, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, and 9/4, a timing which it’s fair to say is rarely used today apart from the odd ‘experimental’ album track.
