Sick of the same old sounds? Can’t afford to splash out on a new sample collection? Why not take a leaf out of Diego Stocco’s book and get creative with everyday objects?!
Diego is one of Spectrasonics‘ extraordinary sound designers who was responsible for many of the sounds found in the company’s flagship synth Omnisphere including the infamous burning piano.
A man who sees music in the most ordinary of items, we’ve seen Diego create a bonsai tree instrument and compose a track using the sounds from a dry cleaners (see videos below). This week has proved even more that the talents of Diego know no bounds as he demonstrates that even the most simplest and mundane of objects can produce surprisingly impressive results…

With their debut release The Lost Tapes Vol 1 proving to be our biggest selling sample library of 2011, there have been high expectations for Freshtone‘s second release – Vintage Drums: The Fills – and it doesn’t disappoint. We caught up with the Freshtone guys Matthew Corbett and Mike Wilkie to find out how the recording process went and what makes this new sample library stand out from other drum fills collections…
Lost Tapes Vol 1 received first class press reviews and has become Time+Space’s best selling sample library of 2011 – have you been surprised by the hugely positive response?
We were pleasantly surprised but then it goes some way to proving our hunch that there is a substantial level of interest in the more organic product, especially if it’s been prepared in an analogue environment.

Fans of Zero-G’s 2009 release Distorted Dancefloors are in for treat as producer Si Begg returns with another sample collection of experimental and cutting edge sounds in the form of Electro Glitch Essentials. We caught up with Si to find out more about the making of this library…
First up, please could you tell us about your music background?
The short version is this. Small boy who’s obsessed with Dr Who buys 7″ single of theme tune. His Uncle plays lots of Jean Michelle Jarre in the Volvo on family holidays and he grows up into a teenager who divides his time playing in bands and devouring all the electronic music he can find. Goes to see Gary Numan, listens to John Peel, discovers Acid House, discovers Stockhausen and starts buying cheap old analogue synths. Makes lots of experimental cut-ups and weird noises in make shift home studio. Starts releasing techno 12″s in mid 90s, remixes Leftfield, Ken Ishi and Arthur Baker amongst others, makes more releases mashing up all genres of electronic music, signs to Ninjatune and Mute records, makes lots more eccentric electronic music, tours the world, starts making music for TV and film as well as becoming something of an obsessive sound designer.
