A look at the masters behind the DS1-MK3 – Weiss

Some brands become synonymous with their fields. They so revolutionise and define their product or process that true experts can’t see beyond them. When it comes to audio mastering, the one-and-only name for many is Weiss.

So when Swedish developers Softube decided they wanted to use their expertise to sculpt a new range of mastering plugins, there was only going to be one brand they’d go too. Introducing new Softube – Weiss DS1-MK3 & Softube – Weiss MM-1. The gold standard of mastering plugins.

To celebrate these new releases we thought we’d take a look through the history books to discover Weiss’ journey, and how they gained legendary mastering status…

Weiss 102 SeriesIn 1985 Daniel Weiss founded the company “Weiss Engineering Ltd.” From the outset, the company concentrated on the design and manufacture of digital audio equipment for Mastering Studios. The modular 102 Series system was their first product line, and it became an immediate worldwide success. Sony Music even installed it in their New York Studios to mix their classical recordings. Sony used it to mix classical music recordings.

It was in the early nineties that Weiss started to write their names into mastering history. This was mainly thanks to the launch of the Weiss Gambit Series. The series consisted of various stand-alone units including an Equaliser, a Dynamics Processor, both A/D and D/A converters, a Sampling Frequency Converter and more. The Gambit Series took ergonomics and sonic quality to a new level. It combined 40-bit floating point processors with sampling rates of up to 96 kHz. This advance in technology led to Weiss Engineering becoming recognised as the leading company when it came to signal processing for Mastering.

The DS1-MK3

Then in 1998, the DS1-MK3 was released. With the DS1-MK3 the Weiss engineers took all of the best features of their time proven 102 Series Dynamics Processors and combined them with the best elements of the Gambit series. The result is a stand-alone digital Dynamics Processor with unparalleled performance and sonic integrity.

Softube’s Weiss DS1-MK3 plugin is a code for code emulation of this classic bit of hardware. It combines Softube’s award-winning modern technology with the classic algorithms and processors of Weiss’ finest release. The result? Every mastering engineer’s fondest dream come true.

The MM-1 is a like for like emulation of the maximiser of the original DS1-MK3. Featuring the very same algorithms as the original digital hardware unit, the MM-1 offers five flavours of limiting. Transparent, Loud, Punch, Wide, and De-ess; intelligently progressing as the ‘amount’ knob turns, and blendable with the mix control, to give you precisely the right amount of power over the feel of your masters.

What are you waiting for? Take your tracks to the next level with Softube’s breathtaking plugins…
