SOS Award Winners Announced!

This year’s SOS Awards are the first to place their emphasis primarily on innovation and contemporary design by limiting the nominations to products launched in the 12 months prior to the voting period. The new format celebrates products launched in the period from September 2016 to the end of August 2017. The awards are voted for by SOS readers, so the more happy users a product has, the more likely it is to win! And, after much anticipation, the results have finally been announced! And we’re delighted to reveal that many of our brands’ products have received awards, or finished as ‘Highly Commended’. Without further ado, here is the full list of our lucky winners…

Award Winners

iZotope Neutron – ‘Best New Plug-In’

Neutron’s innovative new mixing and analysis tools will allow you to achieve a clear, well-balanced mix. Control every aspect of your music, from the visual soundstage of your tracks to the tonal balance of your mix —all with iZotope’s award-winning digital signal processing.

In practice, it’s the old-fashioned virtues of processing power, flexibility and sound quality that make Neutron useful. That it can excel both as a creative ‘box of colours’ and as a troubleshooting Swiss Army knife at this price makes it an attractive proposition for project studio work in particular.” – Sound On Sound

Spectrasonics Keyscape – ‘Best New Software Instrument’

Ten years in the making, Spectrasonics Keyscape – Collector Keyboards features the largest selection of collector keyboards in the world. According to Spectrasonics, their team which includes founder Eric Persing, have developed these sounds to a whole new level of authentic tone and inspiring playability…and, what´s more, these instruments can be transformed into amazing new sounds with the Spectrasonics STEAM Engine™.

“The quality, diversity, playability and creative potential of the included instruments is staggering. I think Keyscape is a magnificent, authentic, definitive and inspirational library which is unlikely to be surpassed in my lifetime.” – Sound On Sound

iZotope RX 6 – ‘Best New Music Software’

iZotope RX 6 Advanced is the flagship of the RX family of products, the industry standard audio repair tool that’s been used on countless albums, movies, and TV shows to restore damaged, noisy audio to pristine condition. From noise reduction to removing clicks to fixing distortion, RX is a complete toolkit for clean up and audio restoration needs. Visually identify and repair problems with the standalone RX Audio Editor application, or use the plug-ins in real time in your favourite DAW or NLE. The RX platform continues to expand and improve, both in its usability and its processing capabilities. RX6 implements several workflow enhancements, as well as a number of new processing modules that target specific audio problems very effectively indeed.” – Sound on Sound

NI MASCHINE JAM – ‘Best New Performance Controller

Sketch patterns with advanced multi-track step-sequencing. Shape your sounds with dynamic, LED-guided Smart Strips. And bring your arrangements to life with an included arsenal of premium sound from MASCHINE software and KOMPLETE SELECT. MASCHINE JAM is your shortest route from idea to reality.

The Jam has got me excited about Maschine as a deeper production environment again, and I can’t wait to see how the possibilities of this new hardware drive development of the platform.” – Sound on Sound

Highly Commended

Softube Console One – Mixer/Mixing Controller category

Softube Console 1 MK II is an integrated hardware/software centrepiece which works in tandem with your DAW. It takes the quick and intuitive workflow of a digital mixer and pairs that with the great sound of an analogue Solid State Logic SL 4000 E mixer. On the hardware, you select the track you want to work with and then you adjust the equalizer, compressor, gate and saturation settings using physical knobs and buttons. So: Select a track, tweak the knobs. Select another track, tweak the knobs – that’s essentially how you use Console 1.

“Softube’s Console 1 brings to your DAW not only the sound of a top-class mixer channel strip but also its ergonomics. It has the potential to make more of a difference to your mixing process than you´d expect!” – Sound On Sound

EastWest MIDI Guitar Series – Software Instrument

The EastWest production team, working closely with Fishman’s software developers, optimized the instruments for guitar players. Pitch bends, whammy bar, dynamics, etc. all function as expected, and in fact provide a much more organic experience than using the instruments with a keyboard and mod wheel. The tracking and latency are superb as you can see in the product videos EastWest produced. Even the sampled guitars are useful, you no longer have to take multiple guitars, acoustic guitars, etc. on the road, but still, have access to a vast array of guitar sounds that can be switched with the TriplePlay FC-1 Floor Controller. The other volumes offer sounds that allow you to produce any kind of music you desire, the collection offers every genre imaginable, even inspirational soundscapes and percussion. The guitar has entered the 21st century with a palette of sounds that are the best available!

It’s great to see one of the bigger sample library developers taking the needs of MIDI Guitar players seriously. The five volumes of the EastWest MIDI Guitar Series integrate well with the impressive Fishman TriplePlay pickup.” – Sound on Sound

Since getting my first guitar at age 7 I’ve been obsessed with music. Although I grew up on a diet of ACDC, The Rolling Stones, and Status Quo (courtesy of my Dad) my music taste has grown massively since then. I’m currently working on my first album which I’m hoping to release sometime in 2018.
