It’s all a question of timing…

Metric: Odd MetersThis week has seen the announcement of Metric: Odd Meter Drumloops from Big Fish Audio in the US. This got me thinking as I believe it is the very first sample library that is completely dedicated to recorded drum performances that are not in the conventional 4/4 signature. There are loops included in 3/4, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, and 9/4, a timing which it’s fair to say is rarely used today apart from the odd ‘experimental’ album track.

It got me thinking what other libraries we have that include performances in anything other than 4/4 and here is a few;

Burning Grooves by Spectrasonics (3/4, 5/4, 6/8, 7/8, 12/8)

Action Drums: Taiko Edition by Nine Volt Audio (3/4, 4/4, 5/4 and 6/8.)

Action Drums: Cinematic Edition (3/4 and 6/8)

Toontrack also released a collection of MIDI performances called ‘Monster MIDI Pack 2 – Odd Meters’ which has files in 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8 and 11/8.

If anybody has made, or would to like to tell us about pieces of music in an odd meter, please feel free to post a comment!

I've been lucky enough to be involved in developing, testing, manufacturing, marketing and selling sample libraries and virtual instruments for over 10 years. During this time I've seen a lot of great new software being released, some of it changing how computer based music is produced. It's this creativity and innovation which makes this industry very exciting and truly inspirational.
